UBU is currently running a development project on disaster preparedness in West Bengal, India. The project is carried out with our Indian partner organisation Joygopalpur Gram Vikash Kendra, JGVK, with funding from CISU.

UBU and JGVK have worked in West Bengal since 2003, within the subjects of arsenic contaminated groundwater, health, hygiene and sanitation, groundwater depletion and flooding from cyclones and monsoon rainfalls.

  • Local management of arsenic contaminated drinking water in West Bengal, India (2004-2007)
  • Water and Sanitation related Health in 24-Parganas, West Bengal, India (2007-2013)
  • Resilience in North and South 24 Parganas, West Bengal – Preparedness for future water related disasters (2014-2017)

Through the collaboration with JGVK and IGF Danmark in the accomplished development projects UBU has obtained a broad knowledge of the local situation in West Bengal, experience in how to work with behavioural change and community development through self-help groups. Furthermore, UBU has become experienced in capacity building of the local partner organisation and other community based organisations regarding both organisational and technical issues. In particular the projects have led to experiences with implementing technological and managerial improvements in this developmental context.
