Mia Øhlenschlæger is in Sundarbans to do fieldwork for her bachelor thesis regarding evaluation of microbial quality of a pond sand filter at Gosaba Island. The pond sand filter was established in 2009 in collaboration between JGVK and UBU in order to provide safe drinking water for 200 people and a nearby hospital.
At the field work Mia’s companion, Shankar, is swimming and diving to take samples of the pond water. Mia will make an assessment of the filter through tests of thermotolerant and total coliform bacteria of filtered an non-filtered water from the pond. Hopefully the assessment can form the basis of an optimisation of the filter efficiency. Read more about Mia’s field work experiences.
