UBU field work at MEVIWASU spring intake

During a visit to Arusha by Jeanne and Thorbjørn the MEVIWASU spring intake was surveyed. After a good night’s rain they went to see the spring intake for the MEVIWASU water supply. The intake is partly from springs and partly from rain water run-off from Mount Meru. One challenge is the amount of sand in the water, due to deforestation and erosion. The sand blocks the intake pipes and stops the water going to the users. In 2011 UBU made a pilot experiment of installation of two permeable infiltration filters to deal with the problem. The filters works, but due to the amount of sand carried down to the intake it will be needed to extend the filters in order to get sufficient water into the system.
